A fine-grained sedimentary rock that easily splits into thin, flat and often flaky layers.
Schist Transition: In parts of Otago, shale like these samples are found in proximity to schist formations and exhibit early stages of metamorphism. It can be found in outcrops and appears sparkly from a distance, especially in road cuttings.
Sedimentary: Formed from the compaction of silt, clay, and organic matter in lake beds or river deltas.
