Jasper is a red variety of chert, a sedimentary rock composed of very finely-crystalline quartz with the red colouration coming from hematite (Fe2O3).
Sedimentary. Formed by moderate pressure and heat.

Locality: Canterbury.
Demonstrates erosion to a smooth oval shape due to movement down rivers and the coastline.
